Closing Time For The Jake 'n Dave Show!

Oh my goodness. I never thought I would actually write what I am about to write: the Jake 'n Dave Show is having its final show this Thursday from 8-10 PM on the KAGE 89.5. There may be some tears being shed, so prepare yourselves, but it's going to be one heck of a memorable event.

In honor of our last show, Snow College President Scott Wyatt is coming on the air to share his dating advice with us. Along with President Wyatt comes some shocking information about the connection between President Wyatt and "Dr." Jake Thomas. You definitely WON'T wanna miss this last finale on the KAGE.

I have been asked twice now if the Jake 'n Dave Show will continue at Utah State University, where both Jake and I are transferring this next fall. The answer is still uncertain, but one thing is for sure: we're not messing around when it comes to handing out dating advice. The future may be unsure, but the Jake 'n Dave Show definitely isn't.

On a personal note, it has been a priviledge serving Snow College this year right alongside my best friend and the wisest cohost I know, Jacob Lyman Thomas. Although I muff him quite often, my appreciation and admiration for him is tremendous and our friendship unbreakable.

Thank you, Snow College and friends, for tuning into our show and for helping us have a great time. May the future bring much success and happiness to you all.

Where every night is True Badger Night,

Dave from the Jake 'n Dave Show

The Final Countdown

Believe it or not, the final days of the school year--and the Jake 'n Dave Show--are winding down. Despite being a little on the sad side, I must admit that the freedom of relaxation and the stress-less life of no homework and warm summer days beckon the Dave towards the future. But first things first, there are still two Jake 'n Dave Shows left. And by golly, we're going to make them the best yet!

Don't miss it this week as Jake and I talk about the ups and downs of dating, along with the "no-no's" of dating conversations. Just check out the poll for this week, and you'll see what we mean. Ever been on one of those dates where things were said that probably shouldn't have been? Whoops. Well don't you worry, everybody has worse tales to tell; even Golden Boy Jake has got some whoppers of things that were said on a date that just plain should have been kept silent.

Don't miss the second-to-last Jake 'n Dave Show this Thursday from 8-10 PM on the KAGE 89.5 FM, http://www.snow.edu/kage! Afterall, the Jake 'n Dave Show is the place where every night is TRUE BADGER NIGHT!

Jake Gets a Date!

This coming weekend is none other than the annual Snow College Spring Ball, and I'll be danged if Jake didn't get a date! It's true, and for those of you who tuned in last week, it was broadcasted live on the show. Jake called in from his cell phone as he nervously asked a certain someone to the dance, and lo and behold she said YES! Good job, Jake my boy. You made me proud.

Even though you never write on this dang blog, you jerk. It's ok though, we've got a good poll coming up for this next show. Get on there and vote. It is definitely interesting... what is most important in the one you date? Is it the physical appearance? The no-B.O. and brushed hair? The ability to believe in God? I know it's a toughie, but definitely something worth looking at.

Jake and I will for sure be speaking about that this week on the show, so don't miss it! Also, do opposities really attract, and if so, is that good in a relationship? Tune in this Thursday from 8-10 PM on the KAGE for the Jake 'n Dave Show!

Most Pathetic...

This last week, I overheard a student's conversation with his friend about a female he was attempting to pursue but who, unfortunately for this love-brother, she was (as quoted) "muffing me... hardcore."

Now first of all, I was excited to hear the word "muff" being used on Snow campus. But secondly, I was taken back by the sad story this guy shared. He was doing everything he could to try and get a date--just one dang date--with this female but she wouldn't do it. Now, this isn't what got me; it were the excuses she was using.

"Did you ask her out?" the friend asked the love-brother.
"Yeah, and she said yes. But then the next day she caught up with me and said something came up and she couldn't do it."
"So did you ask her out again?"
"Well," the love-brother sighed. "I did about a week later, but then she did the same thing the next day."
"Maybe she is just way busy on Fridays," the optimistic friend piped. "Go for it again."
"I did," the love-brother replied. "But then she called me that night and said she had a ton of homework. I think she doesn't want to go on a date with me man..."

Ooof. Gosh dang it anyway, man. All I gotta say is that dear four-letter word that fits this situation so perfectly: M-U-F-F. What the heck? Why can't people, on both genders, just be upfront and honest when it comes to going on a date with someone. A simple "Yes" with a follow-through would do or a simple "No." Let's stop beating around the bush.

We're definitely talking about this excuse-making on the show this Thursday. We've talked before about how to "veto" someone who is showing interest but whom you are not interested in, but apparently this needs to be revisited once again.

But speaking of muff, Jake rocked me last week. Logan... pfft. Who goes there to that devil school, anyway? Oh wait... I guess I am next fall. Blast! Jake always ruins everything and just like the saying, misery loves company. Goodness gracious.

Anyway, tune in this Thursday on the KAGE 89.5 FM or at http://www.snow.edu/kage from 8-10, where it's always True Badger Night.

Until then, go get 'em!

The Ultimate Muff

It is a muff that is beyond compare; few people have successfully announced this muff: yes, the Ultimate Muff.

And Dr. Jake has pulled it off.

This Thursday, the Jake 'n Dave Show is transformed into the Dave Show... with a special guest. That's right, the Dave is gettin' muffed but he's not flying solo! Who's it going to be? Well... we shall see!

Otherwise, I am getting rather tired of this weather. What the heck is going on? Seriously, one day it's up in the 70s, the next day it's snowing like Idaho. Confusion is definitely the word.

In other news, I think I have recovered after last show's depressing talk of break-ups. Jake, on the other hand, I'm not too certain. He took a hard hit after that night.

Anyway, my fellow friends, best of luck with everything and get your dating up in here!

See ya Thursday.

Two months and counting...

Oh my gads — get yer weddin' bells up in here.

That's right, kids, the Dave's got EXACTLY two months until the "Jake 'n Dave Show" finally proves that its advice is actually worth something. Yesiree, on May 23, he and his will finally tie the knot (they had to borrow approximately $3 trillion from the Chinese government to pay for all the expenses, $1 trillion of which went to those engagement photos).

Even though I muff him, I'm proud that he's done well for himself.

Salutes to Dave the Rock on this premonitionary day! (Even if he does beat me by nine strokes in golf).

Spring In Ephraim, and Marsing On the Show!

With all this amazing weather, one cannot help but believe that spring has indeed reached Snow College.  Hopefully, I haven't spoken too soon.  But with all of this new weather comes new possibilities in the dating realm.  New dates.  New reasons to ask someone on a date.  Now the only thing holding one back is the how of it all.  Well, the Jake 'n Dave Show has the answer this Thursday: Professor Nick Marsing.

Professor Marsing is part of the psychology faculty here at Snow, and a few weeks ago spoke at Snow College's weekly Convocations on... you guessed it... HOW to get a date (or avoid one.)  It was indeed interesting, and Jake and I couldn't help but ask him to come on the show and share more wisdom.  As usual, Jake and I will be taking phone calls for Professor Marsing and ask your questions about dating on air.  We will definitely see what goes on in our minds during the whole "Love Game" on this week's show.  Definitely DON'T miss it!

Wow... this is odd... I haven't muffed Jake yet on this week's edition.  Uh... maybe all this spring weather has turned me into a nicer individual?  Ha... naw... Jake is still old Jake and still doesn't have a car and is still technically Amish, despite his recent upgrade to a cell phone.

Thank you.  See you all this Thursday 8-10 PM on the KAGE!

SPRING BREAK!

Well it sure doesn't feel like spring here in Wyoming, but heck there's not school so why the devil not feel like spring? Eh eh! That's right, the Jake 'n Dave Show will be cancelled this Thursday, but don't worry we'll be back next week.

The show this last week was interesting. I actually learned a lot from it, although I suppose I don't really need to know the stuff I learned seeming how the entire show was about first dates. But man oh man, we had some GEMS. Check 'em out:

1. NO MOVIES on the dang first date (Yes... Jake caught me wanting to do that the other night on his first date... whoops.)

2. WHEN ASKING for that first date, don't get too nervous, practice, and "get in the zone" as I like to call it. This means visualizing success in the date-asking and not losing your cool.

3. AGAIN WHEN ASKING don't make it feel like a marriage proposal. A few of our female listeners expressed that they don't want to feel like this intense, romantic thing is about to happen for them; they just want to have fun.

4. ON THE DATE make sure to be a good listener and to not talk too much.

5. CRACK THOSE JOKES on the dang first date too... apparently, both genders agree that a funny first date is more relaxed and enjoyable.

This was just a taste of the gems dropped during the show. Thanks to all our listeners who called in with tons of advice and questions.

Well I hope everybody has a great Spring Break. We'll see ya next week, Thursday from 8-10 on the KAGE!

"Into the West" -- Jake's Defense for LOTR

Hello, Tolkien fans. Yesiree, I have to admit that "I'm quite ready for another adventure" in going on this new blind date. I'm sure I'll have to hold back on the whole "Lord of the Rings" thing (I've put people to sleep with my discourses), but I gotta admit, at least I don't have to hide it until the third or fourth date.

But one correction. The proper greeting for Elvish is "Mae govannen," not "Davecan'tpronounceElvishworthadang," as he so supposed.

And in defense of nerds everywhere, who is worse? A LOTR fan that dressed up for the 2003 premeire of "The Return of the King," or a Raiders fan with spikes on his shoulderpads and his face painted black and white?

Namarie.

Get your blind girl!

Well I'm not sure how many of you heard the show last week, but I admitted to hooking up my good old pal Jake on a blind date. You see, I met this girl the other day who, when I saw her, immediately the image of young Jacob "Big J" Thomas came into my mind. I was completely convinced that this woman MUST go on a date with the young Jake Thomas, and so I had a good conversation with her and convinced her that she needed to go on a blind date with my co-host, Jacob Thomas. She agreed and tuned into the show last Thursday.

Now this is where it gets funny. On air, I muffed Jake about his addiction to Lord of the Rings novels and his linguistic ability with the so-called language "Elvish." (Yes, Jake can speak it fluently.) Almost as soon as I got done making fun of Jake on air, and he shriveled into the corner muttering "That blind date chick isn't going to want to go on a date with me after that!", the phone rang and who was it but none other than Miss Anonymous herself, the girl I asked to go on a blind date with Dr. Jake. After talking a little bit, she asked me to say "Windinger" or something to Jake, which apparently means hello in Elvish. Yes, it is true, the girl I am hooking up with Jake also speaks Elvish! Can anyone say match? Oh my GADS!

And you know, that is what I love about this show; it truly does wonders. A lot of radio shows play heavy-metal rock or call you to repentance for listening to bad music, but we at the Jake 'n Dave Show simply talk about the magic that is in exsistance here at Snow College, that fiesty little fellow called Love.

Don't miss out this Thursday as we have but yet another classic Jake 'n Dave Show. As always, 8-10 PM on the KAGE. And remember, this is the place where every night... is True Badger Night!

Big Show

The Jake 'n Dave Show has been around for a little while now, but I still find myself getting downright excited for every next show, and this next one is probably the biggest one! We are having the legend, the man known as the source for all of our wisdom on the show, Dr. Geoffrey Thomas (also known as Dr. T), yes Jake's father. It was a great pre-recorded interview, and I learned a lot and was taken back by the good information given to us. PLUS, a surprise question came up about Jake, and we got some good dirt on the kid! I promise, you are not going to want to miss out on this show as we hear about the griddy of the Dr. Jake from his very own flesh and blood!

As usual, we'll be taking your calls and comments, wanting to know all about the Snow College dating life. And be sure to vote on our poll this week, as we'll be sharing a lot of those embarassing moments on the date. Trust me, we got a lot of 'em. Plus, we've heard some DOOO-SIES and so we'll have plenty to talk about in that area. You got any? Feel free to post them here or call us Thursday on the show! (435)283-7007.

Happy Spring by the way! I don't know what to do with myself with all this spring action. It is definitely a time for courtin'! Get a move on and make every night be true badger night, just like the Jake 'n Dave Show!

A New Victory for Jake...with Embarassment

Dave and I had the opportunity to be two of seven contestants at the MiSteak Pageant last night for our church unit (the winner got a "steak," thus the pun). We both performed indiviudal talents (I danced, he sung), answered questions, and generally just lost our cools in public.

Whatever happened, we didn't win. In fact, we took 6th and 7th. However, I'll have you know — I got him by one point. Who cares about blog polls? What really counts is on the stage.

Break a dang leg, you jerk.

Big news on the Wasatch Front this week: the Thomas family roamed far from their wintry homeand in southeastern Idaho, and my dad joined us for some prerecording madness. And I'll tell you what — it's funny. Despite the fact that he told some embarrassing stories of from my past (I was an infant back then, mind you), his words are full of wisdom for anyone involved in dating.

Which, I would hope, is all of us.

Check out the Jake 'n Dave Show this week! It's sure to be one you won't forget (I know I won't!).

Won It By a Nose!

It was perhaps the most anxious moment of my entire life: 9:32 PM on Thursday February 12, 2009. KAGE 89.5 FM. We had just closed the amazing poll determining who would be the coolest out of the Jake 'n Dave Show. At 9:25 PM, the poll was a dead-locked tie between Jake and I at 10-10. At 9:30 I closed the poll on the blog, and it was amazing to witness that there had been one more vote to break the tie. It seemed the air ceased to exist in the studio as we realized that the fate of our coolness lay at our fingertips. Who is cooler? Who will own the bragging rights for the years to come?

At 9:31 PM, I announced on the show that we had the results in and that the coolest man on the Jake 'n Dave Show would soon be known. With hands shaking, I pressed the drumroll and hit the results... and... YEEEEAH! I couldn't believe it! I had been voted as the coolest of the two on the Jake 'n Dave Show! I had indeed won it by a nose.

It was definitely a history-making win, but you know I probably wouldn't have it any other way. I'm not sure who that last person to vote was... I have an idea but you never know... but THANK YOU for voting on the blog. It meant a lot to me!

If you missed out on last show, it was indeed one that will go down in KAGE history as the most nailbiting epsiode. But don't worry, because there is always next Thursday. What's up on the list for next time? Well, we will have Valentine's Day reports, another great Jake 'n Dave Top Ten, more muffing on the Jake, and of course all that good advice and tips to help improve the dating life. And, as always, we love getting your phonecalls full of questions and advice.

Jake Turns 28; Dave Runs Away

It's true, the famous "Dr." Jake has turned 28 years of age officially, and I couldn' t take it and had to run away to New Mexico. Ok, so not really, but I did spend a great weekend with the in-laws-to-be. And Jake ATTEMPTED to muff me on air. Apparently, it didn't really work.

Yeah I'm not sure what Jake really did or said last show, but I can promise you that this week's show will be a good one. As you can tell from the poll this week, there is going to be some competition between my partner in dating crime and I, but just like our racquetball games I am sure I will come out on top as usual. But then again... will I? The Jake has shown increased levels of competitiveness lately, with his ATTEMPTS to muff me on air, so it does make a man wonder what will exactly happen.

But seriously, this next show will be good as we receive awesome phonecalls from you all wanting and sharing dating advice. Dating life can be fearful, but it does not have to be fateful. We're trying to prove that belief, one show at a time.

Jake solos the show, muffs Dave on air

Yes indeed, kids, Mr. Dave up 'n left me during our last show. Radio ally A-town reported that he was off somewhere fighting aliens, when I have a vague memory of him telling me that he was just going to visit his future in-laws. Hmm. Either way, I must say that it was an enlightening experience to host the show by myself (what does this button do?).

Until a bunch of girls requested that Spice Girls song. Gross.

A-town did end up joining me on the show for our Top 10 ('80s goggles, headband, and all), and we two single gentlemen decided to report on what we thought were the Top 10 Reasons to Enjoy Single Life. If you missed it, here it is:

10. No commitment, baby!
9. Can you say, “no in-laws?”
8. I don’t have to ask permission to hang out with my buddies.
7. Emotion free for me and me!
6. I can eat all the donuts I want.
5. Ahh…silence.
4. No vegetables in the Monday Night Football buffet!
3. For once in my life, the things I do will go undocumented and un-scrapbooked.
2. I can keep my Batman poster.
1. No female hygiene items in your bathroom!

We've had a humble request to do the Top 10 Reasons to Enjoy Married Life next week. I think I'm gonna leave that one to Dave. In fact, maybe I'll just let him do the whole show. I'm gappin' it back to Idaho.

Friday, January 30, 2009

Oh the joy!

Yes. It's Dave. Again.

I'm not sure if you tuned into the show Thursday night, but it was crazy. Jake attempted to muff me on air, it didn't really work out so well, but at least he tried. On the bright side, we had a lot of good questions and good call-ins.

I think perhaps my favorite question was the question from a caller giving us the name of Mark. Mark is dating a girl who loves shopping, is a little obsessed about it, and she insists on bringing him along for the ride. Now Mark, who (like most guys) doesn't really care ALL that much for shopping, almost drags his feet to the store with her. His question was how exactly he can solve this problem. Obviously shopping is important to his girlfriend, and so because it is important to her he agrees to go along to support her. The thing is though, he's not the biggest fan. What can Mark do to show his girlfriend that he loves her and doesn't want to upset her, but at the same time doesn't go insane in those large shopping malls?

Jake and I talked a little over this one on air, and we both concluded that what is really important is that they COMMUNICATE (insert trumpets blaring.) Mark needs to let his girlfriend know how he feels, but he also needs to do it in a mature and almost "professional" manner. Rather than coming down on her, he should simply state that he feels a little out of place when he goes shopping, and that it's not the most enjoyable thing for him to do. Now, obviously, Mark shouldn't ask for a complete "pardon" from the shopping world; Mark should attempt to continue accompanying his girlfriend every so often to let her know that he does support her. The important thing is, however, that he doesn't go EVERY time.

Overall, I felt the show went well. If you missed it, dang it anyway. But you got a chance to catch next week's show, as always Thursday at 8:00 on the KAGE 89.5 FM Ephraim or http://www.snow.edu/kage. Trust us, you don't want to miss it.

Thanks again for all the good call-ins. Take care and good dating!

Bring on Dr. Poulson!

Howdy there!

Yes, that was a classic greeting from Wyoming. So I'm not sure if you caught anything from the last show, but we had a grand old time, Jake and I. We definitely had some good callers, from strong-willed anti-Valentine's Day haters to our good buddy "Jo Jo" (who by the way is doing well), we had a lot of involvement on our show, which of course we always love.

BUT, this Thursday is going to be like none other. BEFORE, Jake and I basically just spit-balled it and we lucked out. BEFORE we would share advice from our parents and claim it as our own. BEFORE we would be unofficial. But NOW, we ARE official: we have Dr. Lynn Poulson on the show! That's right, Snow College relationship master Dr. Poulson is coming on the show to give us all a few gems and let us know what is and what isn't about dating and relationships. Ever wonder why you lost that girl or guy? Maybe Dr. Poulson can reveal the secret! What's the best way to flirt? Dr. Poulson has got the answers. Move over Dr. Jake, a REAL doctor is coming in!

Be sure to tune in tomorrow at 8 PM on the KAGE or at snow.edu/kage to hear all the good stuff! And as always, call us at (435) 248-7007 during the show to pop your questions for the relationship doctor himself! I'm excited... you better be as well!

Well folks, see you tomorrow! Until then, good dating!

Jake 'n Dave Valentine's Day Guidelines

Oh my good gads. Get your hostility up in here. Dave and I thought we were bringing up a nice, innocent topic when we started talking about Valentine's Day — but I'll be a Cazier if we didn't get darn near lynched.

I'm probably exaggeratin', but maybe I ain't. Whatever the reaction, our findings about the Day of Love were startling. After surveying the Girl Community of Ephraim (Dave's fiancĂ©), we found out a lot of the reasons why the holiday is so loathed — frankly, some of them are downright understandable.

I don't anticipate to list all of our findings here (we'll talk about that on the show), but I do want to offer these guidelines to help you get the most of your Valentine’s Day experience:

1. Keep it between yourselves. There’s no need to go flaunt your gifts or your affection in public.

2. Keep it simple. Most people would probably prefer nice, sweet assurances without a huge display. Beware of spending over $50, but even that might be too high. Don’t overdo it!

3. As a general rule, if there’s no one that you’re really interested in (or that is really interested in you), it might not be a bad idea to ignore this Valentine’s Day (unless you and some friends decide to do a group thing together).

Happy smooches, and best o' luck this controversial season!

We're Ba-ack!

Hey there!

Well, it's official, the Spring 2009 semester at Snow has begun. BUT, guess what else has begun? The second season of the Jake 'n Dave Show! We had an awesome time last night. Thanks to all of you who tuned in and called us up. We had some intense questions and some good points brought up by many of you.

For those of you who MISSED, check it out:

  • Details were shared of my engagement (yup, yup) including Jake's interview of my finace, Emily.
  • (Dr.) Jake shared his startling discovery of the "Intermediate Stage" in a relationship.
  • Flirting tips for women.
  • Someone under the alias "Jo Jo" called in and explained that he is in a pickle: his twin brother's ex-girlfriend is now his girl and he's not sure what to do.
  • Valentine's Day is hated by many females... Jill called in and agreed!
  • Jake 'n Dave's Top Ten this week: Top ten best birthday gifts to give a guy.

This just scratches the surface too! It was a great show, and a fine kickoff, if you ask me. We're excited to keep this show crack-a-lackin' this semester with more crazy interviews and more amazing discoveries in the world of dating.

On another note, Jake is still the Jake. He seems to know what's up and how to handle things.

Best of luck, fellow Snow Daters! Go get 'im, and remember that if you get lonely on a Thursday night, there's always the Jake 'n Dave Show, where EVERY night, is True Badger Night!
